Take her for walks and calm her. Let her know that you love her and settle her nerves. Some dogs will not pee away from home... she doesnt realize she IS home. I have had dogs refuse to go for 2 days when we go to shows. She will relax. Also some dogs that are used to going in a fenced in yard or whatever will not go on a leash if they arent used to it. She will eat soon. I think she is just a little confused right now about whats going on with her life.
If things dont change with in 24 more hours, have her checked by your vet to make sure she is OK.

But with antibiotics and and care he was ok in a couple of days mean while i took some bread and dipped it in water and fed it to him and i put some canned food in a dish and added water to it too. when you blow the whistle you need to call your dog by her name straight after and then that way she will associate the whistle with you wanting her to come at the moment she doesnt know what you want give it a try for a couple of days calling her name after you have blown the whistle then the next week try blowing the whistle without calling her name and see if she comes to you if she doesnt just keep calling her name for a while and then using the whistle on its own again she will soon catch on especially if you reward her after she comes to you

I have a question about my dogs odd behavior

I adopted my 1 year old 50 pound dog from an animal shelter a few months ago. She is such a good girl, well behaved, friendly, smart. And she loves to play with other dogs...well, most other dogs. Recently she has growled at a few little dogs, like yorkies and chihuahuas. But not ALL little dogs. Does anyone know why she would be picky about her dog friends? I dont know anything about her past, but the only thing I can think of that happened since I have had her was my brothers 7 pound dachshund bit her on the nose and hung on, and it really scared her. Would that cause her to become aggressive toward some other small dogs?

well you said that its not all small dogs... soo she prob. doesnt have a bad past or anything. it could be that the other smaller dogs were in heat and sometimes the other females get defensive or maybe they sent out that they were the alpha dogs and she didnt like that idea! i hope this helps in some way ( and good choice with adopting!)

Ive got two ideas for you. First, she had a bad experience with a little dog so she is wary of them. Second, many small breeds have the dominant gene in them. So when they walk into the room the first thing they do is look around and send the message they are top dog. If your girls is dominant, or even a beta female (not alpha but not submissive either) she could just be telling the little dogs not to mess with her. Overall, it is likely to be a combination of both.

Place your dog on a table or other solid surface where you can work around him. Detangle the coat using a comb. Cut out harder mats with a pair of sharp scissors (cut as far from the hair root as possible or youll end up with a hole in the newly trimmed coat).

Trim off the bulk of the coat. Hold up your dogs head. Starting on the head, move the clippers along the grain of the hair. Put the ears flat on your hand to avoid cuts. Make slower strokes over the ears. Continue clipping the neck and shoulders.

Clip down the front legs. Hold one leg straight out in front and clip in a short quick motion. Be especially careful not to cut the delicate skin around the armpit or around the dewclaw.

I recomend that you go to petfinder.com. They have a multitude of dogs that are in need of a home. Your best bet is to get a little dog like a pomeranian, shitzu, or chihuahua. Also beagle mixes are good to. If you get a mixed small breed from a shelter it isnt very much. Like $50 for mixed and up to $300 for a purbred. Small dogs are usually very yippy. They will most likely be the one to bark a lot when somenone is at the door. Good Luck.

Do you need an adult dog that is trained? A lot of so called trained dogs are super expensive but I can not just give you a price since every one prices so differently up to $40K with approval. But in your case sounds like just need a dog that barks which most dogs will do it anyway. I personally like Australian Shepherds if you are looking for small to a medium intelligent breed, but it is mostly what you make out of them by training.

You know what.. a doorbell will better alert you to someone at the door... OR
We live out in the country and cant always hear when someone pulls in.. We have a camera hooked up that is outside on the front porch and it hooks to our television. In the little PIP box on the screen, we can see what the camera sees out front. Then we know when someone has pulled up, can see them at the front door etc..

You dont have to feed a camera, train a camera or walk a camera. If you are looking for something to alert you to visitors a camera is better than a dog.

Try vet bills, food, heart worm medication, flea and tick medication, toys, leashes, collars, treats...and not to mention time consuming. You need to walk your dog, bathe your dog, when ever you do on vacation they cant be left alone, need to go outside to use the bathroom during the day and sometimes night. If you are not ready for this type of commitment, I would suggest a camera at your front door. My neighbors have a device that when a person walks into their yard, a motion detector turns on their outside lights and then they know someone is there. All they do is turn on their TV to a certain channel that is connected to the camera and they can see who is there.

I am looking for a dog that is medium to large sized and doesnt shed. I do not care if it is hyper but it would be nice if it were easily trainable. #1, do not get a Dalmatian - they shed constantly and white hair is all over!

Try the AKC breed link, and description. For breeds you like check out local breeders or National Breed sites.
Adopting is highly recommended, and a great source is a Breed Rescue (dedicated to rescuing one breed of dog) group. Never buy from a "pet store".

Well... One of the best dog ever is the golden retriever. You might not want that cause it has a long coat and it will shed. I suggest that you get a labrodor retriever. Its just like a golden retriever but it has a short coat. The only problem would be during shedding season(all dogs goes through). Other than that seasons it usually dun shed. And it is highly intelligent and easy to train. They are lovable too. Hope this will help. good luck!

i have told this to many people and i will tell it to u. no one can tell u what kind of dog u should get. the best thing to do is pick out some dogs that u like the looks of and research them. no one can tell u what u like. people will tell u what their favorite dog is. so i hate people that ask this question. u need to research the breed of dog u like. find out if it fits ur criteria. im not trying to put u down. i am just trying to tell u that u shouldnt let someone else pick for u. this is a big choice and u shouldnt make the wrong one. so just research and u will be fine. have the kids research as well. they will be taking care of the dog too. so good luck. dont listen to these people cuz u might end up making a wrong choice. maybe u should look at a shelter. everyday shelter dogs get put to sleep cuz no one wants them. try there u may just end up finding the perfect dog

My aunt says that poodles dont shed like most other dogs but you have to brush their hair like you do your own and they are easily trained. They have to go to the groomers to keep their hair under control - the puppy cut is the easiest to maintain - like people do for hair styles.

Ive heard that Bichon Frises are similar in this respect.

The Chinese Crested only has a tuft of hair on its head so shedding is not much of a problem for that breed either - but you have to be careful it doesnt get sunburned.

You should take a look at Poodle rescue. They are very smart dogs who shed the least of all dog breeds. A medium to large sized Poodle would be the Standard Poodle. They are doing a lot of mixing with poodles now, and some of them are rather cute. The sheltie poodle cross is adorable. Depending on how much room you have, I wouldnt get any kind of herding or hunting breed unless u plan on putting them on a treadmill. (yes Im serious) If a dog doesnt get out that energy, then it turns into bad habits. If u have the time to train, excercise, and give mental stimulation, then Australian Cattle Dogs, and Australian Shepperds are good and smart breeds. Labs etc shed a whole lot. hope this helped

Hello! I am wondering what you would do with this situation. We moved into our home about 7 months ago. The people behind us keep a dog outside. They seem to be without much money. I am concerned because it has fallen rather cold where we live and I dont think the dog has any bedding in its house. I went today and purchased some straw to give them. I have never really spoken to them, but I would feel better if I knew the dog has some warmth this winter. Should I just take it over %26 leave by the doghouse? Should I knock on the door and say I wanted to pass it on to them for their dog? I would hate to see it wasted (used for decoration, sit outside all winter, etc). I dont care honestly if they are offended.I would rather the dog be warm than worry about someone being upset with me. How would you go about this? Thanks!

I just want to share a little bit of experience in regards to phoning the SPCA. I live in Ontario (the regulations may be different where you are or have changed since this happened) and a few years ago we had a neighbor who also left his dog outside the majority of the time. As it got colder we too became concerned. We called our local SPCA and they told us that they can not do anything if the dog is provided with some kind of shelter ie; a dog house or even just a covered area. This dog we had called about did have a covered area in his pen.

Im not sure what happened to the dog after that. The neighbors moved a little while after. I just wanted to share that if you decide to call so that there are no surprises if that is the answer you receive from them.

Its very sad when people decide to buy a dog and then leave the poor thing outside. Dogs need human interaction or become mean and then whose fault is it really when the dog bites someone?

I have nothing to add about what you should do about the straw. All the suggestions mentioned are great answers.

Answers:
The best thing to do is to get her used to having her feet messed with. My best friend is a professional dog groomer and trainer, and she plays a game with all the dogs called "My Paw".

Hold the dog in your lap in such a way that it cant get away from you. Grab the dogs paw and hold onto it gently, but do not let the dog have its paw back until it is calmer, or until you are ready to give it back. Once you can hold the paw, start massaging the toes, and repeat the "My Paw" process. Once you can hold it, and massage the toes, bring the nail clippers out and pretend to clip the nails, again playing "My Paw"

Speak in a very soothing voice the whole time. Remember it is not what you say, but how you say it.

Eventually she will learn that you are not going to hurt her.

Dont drug your dog, please. Get help, hold her down, dont coddle her. Shes got to learn that she must submit to having her nails clipped, but that nothing bad will happen to her and theres no reason to be afraid.

Also, its important that youre calm and not apprehensive about her reaction. Your dog takes all her cues from you.

Try using a Dremel instead of a clipper. Many dogs that dont care to have their nails cut are much calmer with the Dremel. Also, try to work on your dogs nails after you exercised your dog. She might be too tired to resist.

you need to train her properly. do not sedate her.

dogs paws are extremely sensitive. even a really well trained dog will still flinch on occassion while having nails cut.
a dogs nails are NOT like humans nails - they go much deeper into the bone/flesh of the toe.

also, be very careful when cutting her nails. its best to cut a very small amount, leave it for a week, then cut another small amount.
this is because a vein runs down the nail - do NOT cut this vein, its very painful, will bleed a lot and can get a nasty infection in the dogs paw/leg.

My dog can NOT bare to have his nails cut. It is an event! It takes a muzzle and atleast 3 people to hold him down and cost about 5 bucks at the groomers. Hes drama king, but when its over hes fine.

Well there is no quick fix to get your dogs to allow you to cut their nails. But I have found that if you play with the dogs paws it will desensitize them to you touching them and eventually allow you to cut their nails without any problem. All you should have to do is when they are just laying next to you touch and pet on their paws and when they do not fight with you about touching them give a treat. Your dog will soon learn that your not going to hurt them and allow you, without hesitation, to cut and groom them.

I have had a couple of dogs that just refused to allow it to happen at first, but with time and a little patience it became easier. Now when I go to cut my current dogs nails she just lays there and when she is all done she eagerly waits for her treat for a job well done.

Get a friend to help number one. I have my girlfriend hold my dog and put some peanut butter on a spoon and have her give it to him to distract him. Also, to avoid cutting too close, I cut his nails maybe every 10 days and just cut a little off so as to not go too far and cut the quick (the nerve in the nail that will bleed if you cut it). If you do cut the quick just quickly blot it with some paper towel for a few minutes. Then just mix a little corn starch and water and it will make a nice paste. Just apply the paste to the nail to close it. Hell be fine though.

You can also slowly get her used to the whole idea.. Leaving the clippers around, touching her feet all the time.. Letting her know that you arent going to hurt her, allowing her to hear the sound of the clippers..
Some people have great luck filing the nails instead, or using a dremel tool on dogs that dont like their nails clipped.. Becareful the dremel tool tho if you have long hair. Since she had a fear of having her nails cut I told the groomer about her fear, I told them that they may want to use a muzzle just in case.

Try taking your dog for walks, that does help keep the nails shorter. The dog seems to wear down their nails as the walk on the sidewalks. I use to walk my dog every day and I never had to have any one cut her nails. It was only after I became ill that I wasnt able to take her for walks every day when I needed the groomer to cut her nails.

How To Train Your Dog

One of the few things that dog owners or prospective dog owners think about is whether or not they will need to train their dog. Although training a dog is not absolutely essential unless your dog has a particular problem, a small amount of training to remove bad habits and set boundaries for your dog should be considered. In addition to this, a well trained dog will feel much more secure in your home when it knows its boundaries. Even in the wild, a dog will have some sort of enforced boundaries of behavior by the pack structure and hierarchy that exists. At the end of the day, your dog is part of your pack.

A very important point to note about dog training is that any form of training should be approached from the perspective of positive reinforcement. This simply means that you should reward your dog with praise, a treat or even better, both for any positive behavior that she exhibits. Success will come quickly to anybody who praises a dog for good behavior. The same cannot be said for somebody who punishes a dog for NOT exhibiting good behavior.

For example - If you ask your dog to sit and she does, you give her a treat. In the dogs mind sitting when told equals treat. Simple.

Now what if you tell the dog to sit and she doesnt, and then you punish her? In the dogs mind you have just dished out a random punishment for nothing. This will only serve to confuse your dog and lead her to mistrust you.

Positive reinforcement is the key.

One of the most common mistakes that dog owners make is to inadvertently train their dog....... into bad habits. Typical examples include barking, face licking, jumping up. Lets look at each of these.

Barking - Most dogs bark, thats a fact. Its WHEN a dog barks that determines whether its normal behavior or a bad habit. If your dog only barks when somebody comes to the door - fine. This is normal territorial behavior. Your dog is warning you - as a member of its pack - that theres potential danger at the door.

If your dog spends the best part of its waking life barking at just about anything including you, then its formed into a bad habit - but one that is easy to cure.

The first mistake that people make is to shout "Quiet" or "Shut up" at their barking dog. The main reason why this will not work is simple. Your dog barks, then you bark. From your perspective you are shouting at your dog to shut up. From your dogs perspective, you are barking along and enjoying the noise.

A more effective method is to wait for a pause in your dogs barking then heap lots of praise and a treat upon your dog. As soon as the barking starts again, ignore your dog, walk off - anything but DO NOT pay your dog any attention. Then, when the barking stops its treat time again. It wont be long before your dog puts two and two together.

Face Licking - Face licking is an overthrow from your dogs puppy days. Face licking is a way for a puppy to get its mother to regurgitate food for them. You will often see this in the wild. Also wild dogs will lick the face of a higher member of the pack to express and accept their submissive status in the pack. Unfortunately, because you and your family members are higher in the pack, you get the licks!

At first sight face licking is not a problem but should still be avoided due to health concerns. Never let a dog lick a baby or toddlers face. This is likely to expose the infant to germs that its immune system may not be able to handle. Similarly if your dog has worms or has been investigating other dogs faeces or even grooming itself, the last thing you want is for your dog to come and lick your face. Try and discourage this behavior using positive reinforcement.

When your dog approaches your face firmly - but not shouting - say "No!" If the dog doesnt back off push her away from your face. When the dog first responds to the "No" phrase, its time for a treat. Keep this up consistently, and the dog will realize face licking is unacceptable.

Jumping Up - Jumping up may not seem such a bad habit, but if there are young children about it can be quite dangerous. Your dog will not know that jumping on you is o.k. but jumping on the children isnt. This will just confuse the dog. Try to discourage this behavior by telling the dog "Down!" every time she jumps up. Give her a treat when she first responds and every time after until you just need to use the words.

There are lots of simple ways that you can train your dog. These are just a few. Theres no need to tolerate bad habits in your dog as they can be so easily remedied. Oh, and never pay heed to the phrase "You cant teach on old dog new tricks", you can - its never too late.
