i need a small or medium watch dog that is good with children oh and i need a price range. and one that will alert me when someones at the door.

what about a cairn terrier ? they are fierce med sized dogs and they are great with kids . they will also let you know if someone does not belong there where you live . cannot say how great they are as watch dogs they are excellent.

I recomend that you go to petfinder.com. They have a multitude of dogs that are in need of a home. Your best bet is to get a little dog like a pomeranian, shitzu, or chihuahua. Also beagle mixes are good to. If you get a mixed small breed from a shelter it isnt very much. Like $50 for mixed and up to $300 for a purbred. Small dogs are usually very yippy. They will most likely be the one to bark a lot when somenone is at the door. Good Luck.

Do you need an adult dog that is trained? A lot of so called trained dogs are super expensive but I can not just give you a price since every one prices so differently up to $40K with approval. But in your case sounds like just need a dog that barks which most dogs will do it anyway. I personally like Australian Shepherds if you are looking for small to a medium intelligent breed, but it is mostly what you make out of them by training.

Get a half Basset Hound Half Beagle, theyre cute, but they will sleep in your bed, but they have total control of you, and mine caught 2 burglars in the middle of the night.

They are awfully lazy, no thought of when their stomachs will explode, but are loyal and secure to play with
also they are friendly!!.

I would go for an adult toy poodle. Young ones are rather nippy but theyre really sweet once theyre older.

We live out in the country and cant always hear when someone pulls in.. We have a camera hooked up that is outside on the front porch and it hooks to our television. In the little PIP box on the screen, we can see what the camera sees out front. Then we know when someone has pulled up, can see them at the front door etc..

You dont have to feed a camera, train a camera or walk a camera. If you are looking for something to alert you to visitors a camera is better than a dog.

I suggest the staffordshire breed these dogs are very protective of the home and their family especially children.Do not be afraid of this breed once you have one you will be glad you did.Be good to this breed and they will put their life on the line for their family.This breed is small to medium but very strong and love to play at all times.Get a puppy though you dont know the trama they have endured up to adult hood.

Get a dog as a family pet not a watch dog. If you are dedicated to any dog, they will be dedicated back and alert you of dangers. That said... many people just need to get off the computer and watch their kids instead of trying to find something else to do their job. :)

go with a hound dog. i have 2 mini dachshunds, they are the BEST watchdogs i have ever had. extremely perceptive. great watchdogs, but not guard dogs (theyre tiny)

Poodles are great with kids if you get them at at most 2 years old. i have a poodle and she is wonderful with my son and other kids in my family. I keep her in the house at night and put her outside during the day. these dogs can be inside or outside dogs. Poodles are very protective over their family. if brushed at least once a week there is no shedding. very easily groomed. i take mine to the groomers twice a year once in march and once in july. they do not eat much either. you can buy them for around $150-$200 that is a male that is AKC or CKC registered. females are usually about $250-$350

Dogs need a lot of attention and cost a lot more money beyond the purchase price. Try vet bills, food, heart worm medication, flea and tick medication, toys, leashes, collars, treats...and not to mention time consuming. You need to walk your dog, bathe your dog, when ever you do on vacation they cant be left alone, need to go outside to use the bathroom during the day and sometimes night. If you are not ready for this type of commitment, I would suggest a camera at your front door. My neighbors have a device that when a person walks into their yard, a motion detector turns on their outside lights and then they know someone is there. All they do is turn on their TV to a certain channel that is connected to the camera and they can see who is there.

I need to find my perfect dog breed | off leash dog parks

I need to find my perfect dog breed

I am looking for a dog that is medium to large sized and doesnt shed. I do not care if it is hyper but it would be nice if it were easily trainable. I know that all dogs shed but some just not very much. If you could please help me out with this i would be very grateful. The youngest child in my family is 15 so that shouldnt be a problem. Thank You

This decision should fit your lifestyle and preferences - which will be more fair to the dog too.
#1, do not get a Dalmatian - they shed constantly and white hair is all over!

Try the AKC breed link, and description. For breeds you like check out local breeders or National Breed sites.
Adopting is highly recommended, and a great source is a Breed Rescue (dedicated to rescuing one breed of dog) group. Never buy from a "pet store".

Well... One of the best dog ever is the golden retriever. You might not want that cause it has a long coat and it will shed. I suggest that you get a labrodor retriever. Its just like a golden retriever but it has a short coat. The only problem would be during shedding season(all dogs goes through). Other than that seasons it usually dun shed. And it is highly intelligent and easy to train. They are lovable too. Hope this will help. good luck!

I agree with whoohooo but i like the golden retriver more even though it sheds... but its also smart easy to train. :O)

i have told this to many people and i will tell it to u. no one can tell u what kind of dog u should get. the best thing to do is pick out some dogs that u like the looks of and research them. no one can tell u what u like. people will tell u what their favorite dog is. so i hate people that ask this question. u need to research the breed of dog u like. find out if it fits ur criteria. im not trying to put u down. i am just trying to tell u that u shouldnt let someone else pick for u. this is a big choice and u shouldnt make the wrong one. so just research and u will be fine. have the kids research as well. they will be taking care of the dog too. so good luck. dont listen to these people cuz u might end up making a wrong choice. maybe u should look at a shelter. everyday shelter dogs get put to sleep cuz no one wants them. try there u may just end up finding the perfect dog

My aunt says that poodles dont shed like most other dogs but you have to brush their hair like you do your own and they are easily trained. They have to go to the groomers to keep their hair under control - the puppy cut is the easiest to maintain - like people do for hair styles.

Ive heard that Bichon Frises are similar in this respect.

The Chinese Crested only has a tuft of hair on its head so shedding is not much of a problem for that breed either - but you have to be careful it doesnt get sunburned.

You should take a look at Poodle rescue. They are very smart dogs who shed the least of all dog breeds. A medium to large sized Poodle would be the Standard Poodle. Take a look at http://www.petfinder.com and adopt one. Or, you could take a look at the Airedale Terrier. Theyre also very smart, low-shedding dogs that dont have the typical Terrier temperament.

Poodle. They shed very little and you can get them in toy (think chihuahua), standard (jack-russel terrier) and giant (taller than a lab but still very fine-boned) varieties.

Ive never had a poodle-- I dot really know how easily they can be trained-- but I worked at a kennel for two years and I discovered that the larger they were, the friendlier they tended to be. They can be hyper sometimes but theyre slender dogs and shouldnt be able to over-power you in case it gets out of hand.

DONT get a labradoodle (lab-poodle cross) labradors shed normally, its a fifty-fifty chance that youll get the tight poodle coat or the loose labs coat. Plus, theyre beefier and the breeder will probably try to sell this pup for a higher price because its a designer dog breed. *eyeroll* Whatev...

Go to www.puppyfind.com and they have a section where you can put in the preference of the size and upkeep of the dog. They also have all dog breeds on the website so that way you can look through them. For each dog they give you background information, size, grooming requirements, exercise requirements, its watchdog abilities, and whether or not its good with other dogs. POODLE, they do not shed like other dogs. They shed less than any other breed. They are very easily trained and smart.

I also love airdales. They shed a little and are sweet.

They are doing a lot of mixing with poodles now, and some of them are rather cute. The sheltie poodle cross is adorable. Depending on how much room you have, I wouldnt get any kind of herding or hunting breed unless u plan on putting them on a treadmill. (yes Im serious) If a dog doesnt get out that energy, then it turns into bad habits. If u have the time to train, excercise, and give mental stimulation, then Australian Cattle Dogs, and Australian Shepperds are good and smart breeds. Labs etc shed a whole lot. hope this helped

How Would You Handle This Dog Issue

Hello! I am wondering what you would do with this situation. We moved into our home about 7 months ago. The people behind us keep a dog outside. They seem to be without much money. I am concerned because it has fallen rather cold where we live and I dont think the dog has any bedding in its house. I went today and purchased some straw to give them. I have never really spoken to them, but I would feel better if I knew the dog has some warmth this winter. Should I just take it over %26 leave by the doghouse? Should I knock on the door and say I wanted to pass it on to them for their dog? I would hate to see it wasted (used for decoration, sit outside all winter, etc). I dont care honestly if they are offended.I would rather the dog be warm than worry about someone being upset with me. How would you go about this? Thanks!

Be direct, If they love their dog they will appriciate it. If they are neglectful, maybe theyll be less so ,knowing you are keeping an eye out.

You could try leaving an anonymous letter with it voicing your concerns and leaving the hay for them?

Another suggestion would be to call your local Humaine society to investigate whether they are providing adequate housing(shelter), food, water for their dog.

Bring it over and tell them what you bought it for. If they get offended and wont take it, call animal control/thehumane society/aspca, whoever is responsible for animals in your area, and tell them that the dog doesnt have adequate shelter from the cold and let them handle it from there.

Neglect is abuse call animal control or your local police, if someone doesnt the dog will die!!

Leave it alone because even if you do the right thing the neighbors will hate U

I would contact them and just make some excuse like the bale of straw was just lying around and you thought they would like to use some for their dog.

Even say if you want that you used some for yours and this was the left over and you didnt want it going to waste. Even tell them you will help or put it in the dogs house yourself if they dont want to bother.

Whats a little fib as long as the dog is getting taken care of. And if all else fails and it comes to a life and death situation with the dog. Ask to take it from them of call the right lawful animal police.

I would call the local Humane society and explain the situation. Apparently, the real dumb animal lives in the house.

I would take over the straw and introduce myself. Just let them know you love animals and hope they wont mind if you spoil theirs a little. Then just check on him and make sure hes okay. Ask them about allergies or anything in case you want to take him treats.

well first give them the courtesy and inform them of your concern and then give them the straw. They shouldnt be offended, they should be ashamed for leaving the dog outside in the cold. If they dont act on it, call the humane society. People who cant take care of their dogs (or any kind of animal) should have their dogs (or animals) taken away from them. They (these people) should be left outside in the cold. this issue ticks me off so bad, sorry..

Why the heck would you you buy Straw to keep a dog warm?
Here is what I would do: take a blanket or two, knock on their door and say "I got new, dont need this old, dont want to throw it out, thought your dog might like it at night. Okay with you??

I just want to share a little bit of experience in regards to phoning the SPCA. I live in Ontario (the regulations may be different where you are or have changed since this happened) and a few years ago we had a neighbor who also left his dog outside the majority of the time. As it got colder we too became concerned. We called our local SPCA and they told us that they can not do anything if the dog is provided with some kind of shelter ie; a dog house or even just a covered area. This dog we had called about did have a covered area in his pen.

Im not sure what happened to the dog after that. The neighbors moved a little while after. I just wanted to share that if you decide to call so that there are no surprises if that is the answer you receive from them.

Its very sad when people decide to buy a dog and then leave the poor thing outside. Dogs need human interaction or become mean and then whose fault is it really when the dog bites someone?

I have nothing to add about what you should do about the straw. All the suggestions mentioned are great answers.

I would probably go next door and say :" Hey, I bought this straw and I dont need it afterall, can I put it in your dogs house for him?" This way, you can be sure that you are being polite, inconspicuous and the dog is getting to use the straw! Good Luck!
