Training Your Dog To Roll Over
- The first step is to have your dog lie down. In the earlier lessons, I showed you how to train your dog to lie down. Usually you would just need to say, "down!" and your dog will lie down.
- Say the word "roll over" and make direct eye contact with the dog. Once you say "roll over," help the dog to roll over on its back. Then repeat the word roll over.
- Keep doing this trick for a long time until it understands it. Praise the dog whenever it succeeds, because this isnt an easy thing to teach a dog to do.
- When you are more advanced, you can tell your dog to roll right, or roll left. Teach your dog the roll right command first of all, work on it, and then go onto the roll left command, so it wont be confused between its left and right.
- When your dog is rolled over on its back, put a treat next to its right ear, and say, "roll right!" very sternly and forcefully, because teaching a dog its lefts and rights is a really hard thing to do.
- Keep repeating this process with the treat, and when your dog fully understands the "roll right" command, then try it without the treat.
- Repeat the same exact process, except this time with the "roll left!" command.
