Training a Dog To Get Along With a Cat

  • Introducing your dog to a cat may be an awkward experience, but there is nothing too difficult about it.
  • First step is to leash up your dog, and have another person hold the cat. Put the cat in front of the dog, and let the dog go up to the cat, while the other person is still holding it.
  • If the dog exposes any negative reactions to the cat, you pull the dogs leash, and the other person pulls the cat away. Firmly scold your dog by saying "bad!" or "no!" so it would understand that you are trying to introduce it to the cat.
  • Try to give both the cat and the dog a calm experience, so it would be most comfortable for both pets.
  • Constantly keep rewarding your dog, with treats, or even hugs, so it would know that it is making great progress.
  • If the dog attempts to bite the cat, pull on the leash most firmly, scold it by saying "no!" and put a muzzle on it for about 30 seconds. Remember to not keep the muzzle on for too long, or else the dog will forget about it, and it wont feel like he is being punished anymore.
  • If the dog is trying to get in the cats food, temporarily set up baby crates, separating the dog and the cat.
  • When you think you can trust the dog, open up the baby crate, and if your dog tries to get in the cat food, put a muzzle on the dog, lock him up in the room for 30 seconds again, and take the muzzle off.
  • Keep repeating all of those techniques until the dog and the cat feel comfortable with each other.
Fun Fact: Dogs can see in color, just not the same bright colors that humans see in.
