Im going to be adopting a one year old American Pit Bull Terrier with in the next couple weeks(Female - 52 pounds) from my local animal shelter and i am ordering some stuff off of a website (A reputable website!) i already ordered a twelve month supply of both Frontline Plus and Heartgard Plus. I also ordered Super Pure Omega 3 240 capsules (I am ordering everything i need all at once.) I have already bought multiple toys, three leashes (A nylon leash, a chain leash, and a leather leash), two flat collars, Shampoo, a crate/kennel, a extra large dog bed, an elevated food and water dish holder, food and water bowls (Four), and i have $2,500 set aside in the bank for any emergencies (Unexpected Veterinary Emergency)... I do have a veterinarian appointment set up for June 16th (I will be getting my American Pit Bull Terrier on the 12th) and i am signing her up for obedience classes that start on June 22nd.
Is there anything else that i need for my new companion that i am missing?

CONGRATS on getting a dog. You seem very excited. What you have now should be fine, the dog will be lots of work but it is so worth it. Depending on how well shes trained i sugest preparing yourself lol your house is ready, but make sure before you get her your 100% willing to take the time and do the work having a dog means. Normally a dog should be fed once or twice a day, smaller bowlfuls if twice. But it also depends on the dog. I sugest ordering the smaller ammount. Rember you cant dictate how the dog will react to the food. Maybe it upsets her tummy, maybe it causes her to have issues taking a dump, maybe she just hates the food. Dogs can be picky. My own lost there taste for the old food and wouldnt eat, now i have to buy another kind. Id be happy to say more about how to care for a dog if youd like to im or message me.

Katharine Lemansky ducted taped her dogs mouth, and boasted about it on Facebook.

Lemansky was thought to have lived in South Daytona, Fla., under the name Katie Brown, as hundreds of residents flooded the police department with complaints about the photo after it was posted Friday.

It was found that she actually resides in Cary, N.C., under a different name. Cary cops worked with Florida authorities to track Lemansky down.

"Taping the dog’s muzzle shut was a terrible decision on Ms. Lemansky’s part, and charging her with animal cruelty under North Carolina law was the right thing to do,” Cary Police Captain Randall Rhyne said in a statement Monday.

Cops did say that the chocolate lab mix appeared to be unharmed and all of Lemanskys dogs were "very well cared for."

"The dogs are current on their shots, spayed and microchipped," Police Captain Rhyne said. "They are clean and well-nourished and appear to be comfortable in their surroundings."

As a result, the dogs were not removed from the home, a decision that did not sit well with PETA.

The animal rights organization lobbied for the dogs to be removed from Lemanskys care on Tuesday in a letter to Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman.

Lemansky was charged with animal cruelty.

The North Carolina resident did not lose her dogs, as they were found in good health.

"It would show a shocking lack of empathy for others suffering to tape a dogs mouth shut and then brag about this cruelty on social media," PETA Senior Director Colleen OBrien said in a statement.

"Any dogs in this womans custody may be in danger, which is why PETA is calling for the immediate confiscation of any animals in her home as well as a ban on owning animals if she is convicted of this callous act."

Lemansky is facing a fine and 150 days in jail.

To crate train your pup, the very first thing you need to make sure is that your crate is not too big. The pup needs to be able to turn around and stand up, but THAT IS IT. As a general rule, dogs are clean by nature, so they will not use the bathroom where they will have to lay in it.

If your pup can use the bathroom in one corner and then retreat to another corner away from it, then the crate is too big. If you can not find a crate small enough, you may need to modify a small one to make sure there is not too much room. Also, you need to make sure that you clean the crate very well each time after she goes in there. You do not want her to be able to smell her waste AT ALL, or it will make her keep wanting to go there.

The second thing is that you need to make sure that you take your pup out very often, and praise her when she goes outside with a simple praise of "Good outside" or "Good potty". If you are waiting over three hours to take your pup out, you are waiting too long. Your pup has a small bladder and is very young, so you have to make sure that you are not expecting too much out of her. She will need to use the bathroom immediately after eating and playing (ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS AND MAKE IT A HABIT)

If you crate is not too big, and you are not leaving her in there over 3 hours, then she may have some other issues, or there is the possibility that you got a very stubborn pup.

Remember, If you do your part, eventually your dog will catch on. It may not be in the time frame you want, but you just have to be patient and keep doing the right things over and over.

If she is doing that in her cage, then her cage is probably too big for her. She should be able to just go in and turn around. It sounds mean, but it is how cage training is supposed to be done. Since you already have a cage, there are usually inserts that come with it or that you can buy to cut down the sixe of the cage. Dogs will not pee or poo where they have to sleep.

Until she is potty trained, remove bedding from the crate and make the crate smaller. There should only be enough room for her to stand up, turn around and lay down comfortably. Generally if there is excess room in the crate they will go in there if there is still room to get away from it. So your crate might be to big for her.
Puppies can only hold it for 3 to 4 hours. Dont expect miracles. She is a baby. Take her out to the same spot each time you go. Let her know where you are going as you are on your way.. Lets go outside! Lets go potty.. repeating on your way to the place you want her to go and praise her immediately when she goes in the yard.
If you bought her from a pet store or from a breeder who keeps dogs in crates this can be a problem for quite some time as she doesnt know any better. You will have to be very dedicated to the cause and work with her with positive reinforcement. She is not to get in trouble for going in the crate. This is not her problem... its yours now. Take the puppy out every 30 minutes or so when you are home. The more accidents she is allowed to have in the crate or carpet, the harder it will be to stop it. You are really going to have to step up the dedication here and also make sure via a vet check that she doesnt have a UTI or other health issue.

I Just Had My Dog Put To Sleep How Do I Cope

When I was 2, we had to put a dog down. I dont even remember her. But the dog we just had to put down today, she meant more to me than most people do. She was almost 15, and had more problems than you could shake a stick at. We had to do it, and now that shes gone... we knew it was coming, but now that its, well, gone... what do I do?

P.S. We also have another dog who is turning 13 in a couple months. I think even she knows what happened.

Wow.. Thats a hard question.. Its hard you know.. I had a dog that had cancer, and we had to put her to sleep.. She could no longer eat, or walk, it hit her hard and fast and the only choice we had was to put her to sleep.. She would not get better.. Its a hard thing to get over.. Ill tell you, its been 5 years now, and I still think what if I had done this or what if I had given her more time But you know what, nothing would have been any different.. Its been 5 years and I still cry today if someone mentions her name, or if someone wants to know what happened to her, or if I hear certain songs on the radio...

The problem with dogs, is that they dont live forever, and when they are gone, they take with them a chunk of your heart.. And you think you will never ever love a dog like you loved that dog.. You dont want to love another dog, cause it hurts do darned bad to lose them..

But the next thing you know you have this new dog that is stealing your heart away from you, no matter how hard you try to resist them, how hard to try to keep that distance and not let your self love them so much, and you cant remember how it happened and why you let it happen and then you forget about it and just love the new dog...

You dont get over it, you remember them forever, and then one day you look up and you are happy that you had the chance to spend time with that dog, had her share a part of your life and even tho she is gone, you at least know that you got to share in part of what she was, who she was and spend even that short time with her... Cant get it back, cant start over, will never meet a dog like that again, BUT, you at least got to share a very tiny piece of her life and felt love and loved her, before she was gone...

Not really anything you can do to cope. Keep pictures of your dog around, keep your attention towards the one you still have (she may show signs of depression, as well).

Just a side note, I would never have a dog put down, to me it is cruel and inhumane. If the dog is sick get it medicine if its in pain, there are pain medicines for dogs. To me no dog should EVER have to be put down. Would you kill a family member if they were sick?

I am so very sorry for your loss. I had to do this myself a few years ago when my Catahoula had Intestinal Bowel Disease. It is so sad and is much akin to losing a person. How to cope? Well the best answer I can give is to take one day at a time. It helped me to gather the dogs things up and put them away, so I didnt have to look at them constantly. In a few weeks or months you can go through those things and maybe donate or put them away in a memory box. I do recommend when you feel up to it to create a memory box. This is a box that you can decorate any way you like and place mementos of the dog in. The collar, tags, favorite toys whatever...
Talk to people who will understand what you are going through, especially other family members who are also hurting. Dont keep things bottled up and just try and think of the good times you had with your dog.

To answer your original questions "How Do I Cope". You cannot. You will begin a downward spiral of depression filled with prescription drugs washed down with alcohol. You will lose your job because of a careless car accident that you will be drunkenly responsible for. Your friends and family will comfort you, but to no avail. You will be begin cutting and not eating. You will lie on the floor thinking ideas about how now to think until it drives you insane.

But that is not what your dog would have wanted.

Your dog would want you to continue living and being the person that he/she always thought you were: Fantastic and vibrant.

Please take care of yourself during this episode. It does not matter how you grieve and for how long. All that matters is that you come out of it healthy. Make sure someone you trust is taking care of you during this episode so you stay safe. I am sorry to hear about your loss. That sucks.

It will hurt less later. But not today I am unfortunately.

This will take time , everyone has their own way of grieving the lost of a loved one. I had to put my cat to sleep this past December and it was the most difficult decision I had to make but I knew she was suffering so I had to put my feelings aside and do what I thought was best for her, I still grieve for her at times but it is getting easier everyday. i am going thru the same thing my 7 year old guinea pig pass way yesterday in my arms so i feel your pain. think about all the good times you had with her. what might help is talking to some you know like a friend or a some one that is close to you. maybe try writing a poem. or just take one day at a time and relax and enjoy the other pets you still have. other pets always know whats happened. my dog Sammy was crying when i was taking my guinea pig out of her cage because he senses that she is dead. and my piggy knew it was her time to go. she was a at that age were its time to go to heaven and be free with other pets that have pass on.

I feel your pain, believe me, I had my sweet puppynose for 14 years, for the 4 months before we had to send him to the rainbow bridge, he wasnt eating, wasnt walking very well, just tired and listless when I took him in to the vet, I was told that it was inoperable cancer that was crushing his heart and other organs, He would have had only a week or 2 to live anyhow and would have died from starvation and dehydration, that is a horrific way to die besides the pain he was in. I begged the doctor to save him, no matter how much the surgery cost. but he told me that surgery wouldnt save him, to put him under the anasthetic would kill him as surely as the sun would rise. I had to decide how much did I love him, and how selfish as I. I made the same decision you did sweetie. The only comfort I can give you is that you did the best thing for her that you possibly could. You kept your promise, the one you made years ago to take care of her, love her and put her best interest and comfort above your own needs, feelings and reasons. No one ever said goodbye was easy, and you will miss her every day, I lost him almost a year ago, and I still have his dog tags on my key chain. I still get out of bed and try to be careful not to step on his tail, I still cry. Mourn your loss, you lost your friend and dont let anyone diminish that grief by telling you its just a dog. Dogs are people too and if it matters to you, then it matters alot.

Its a protective behavoir that can be remedied. When someone comes over, make her sit a few feet away from the door, and do not let her greet the visitor until she is quiet and stays sitting. Then let her go over to greet them. She will soon learn that it is her job to sit and be polite rather than bark and cause a scene.
Oh and the previous answer of its too late is bull.
A humans learning peak is also in childhood, but are we incapable of learning after age 12? I dont think so. It will just take a little longer. I have potty trained a 10+ year old dog after it was an outdoor dog his whole life, so that is an old wives tale.

Your dog needs to learn its "sit stay" and "down stay" commands. The dog believes it is the homeowner. You need a friend to practice training with the dog so she can learn the appropriate response to visitors. She needs to take your command.

Unfortunately you have let the problem go on so long it will be hard to stop.

You should have trained her correctly when she was a pup by having her "SIT" and pay attention to YOU when people enter the home (obedience lessons are wonderful)
You can get a water spray bottle and when she barks give her a quick squirt in the face (only until she stops barking). Reward her when she is quiet. Practice this with a friend if you can, have the dog on a leash.

DO NOT spray her when she has stopped barking!!!
this is exactly how the expensive electric collars work - but is less cruel and cheaper.. you can buy spray collars that do this too.

You didnt say if shes a chihuahua. If she is, you may not be able to train her out of it. Really small dogs are insecure and bark a lot at people like that.

You can try what my neighbor and I do when I visit her and her chihuahua barks at me. One of us picks up the dog and I hold the dog. Shes fine when Im holding and petting her. Sometimes this will stop the dog.

You may want to get a dog training video. There are dog training video websites and they have training on several things.

Another thing is to try to train her to "use your inside voice" which is a very tiny bark.

They also do have a no-bark collar you can buy and use to train your dog. Youll want to read up on it to see if youre comfortable working with it.
