How To Train Your Dog To Be Off Leashdog training

Train Your Dog To Be Off Leash

  • The first step when you train your dog to work off leash, you need to make sure your dog is 18 months or older, although there can be exceptions to that rule.
  • You need to see if your dog is mentally mature, because letting go of the leash is a very hard thing to train your dog.
  • Even if your dog is maybe two to three years old, then you need to see first if your dog is mentally mature, in a way that does your dog get distracted easily when eating its dinner for example, you can test your dog that way: Give your dog its dinner, and have your family be noisy talking all at once. Not in a sense of obnoxious noisy!! That hurts the dogs ears, and can injure them. Just talk all at once, and if your dog turns its head, and keeps turning its head, than you need to wait a while longer.
  • Also, check your dogs obedience skills. Your dog needs to know the basic commands, without any lures, although if you still reward your dog with treats, it will be fine.
  • You also need to know what breed your dog is. For example, if your dog is a racing dog, like a whippet that can run after anything, be very cautious, because it can be very dangerous for your dog.
  • Always make sure that if you practice outside, it is a very well gated area, and nobody is going to open the gate. If you practice inside, then make sure that nobody opens the door, and that the studio is big.
  • Now for the real training, your dog needs to be by your side, performing the heel position for you, without a leash on.
  • Have your dogs very very favorite treats in your right hand, because the dog is going to be heeling by your left side.
  • When your dogs full attention is on you, then move forward, and yell for example: "Coco!! Come here girl!" If your dog obeys reward it very well. It probably took your dog a lot of wild guesses before it did the right thing.
Fun Fact: Dogs can see the color black better than we can.
